The second episode of the Adventure Time sequel miniseries Distant Lands premiered on November 19 on HBO Max. The episode,
entitled Adventure Time:
Distant Lands - Obsidian, focuses
on the relationship between Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch) and Marceline
(Olivia Olson) both before and after the original series.
Since
the end of Adventure Time, Bubblegum and Marceline have been living in romantic and
domestic bliss. But, when a dangerous beast they impression long ago reemerges, they find themselves the proctors of the Glass Kingdom. This
responsibility brings up old wounds, including the one that broke the couple up
in the first place years ago. This heartfelt special featured new song and the beloved characters confronting some of their darkest times personal shortcomings.
The episode features details
about Bubblegums and Marceline’s romantic backstory, which was alluded to
briefly throughout the original series and famously revealed by Olsen
(Marceline’s voice actor). While the relationship remained largely subtextual
in the original series, due to the extent of LGBTQ representation studios would
allow at the time, the couple, dubbed Bubbline was a favorite among fans and shippers.
During the 2018 finale, “Come Along With Me,” the two finally embraced and
kissed, revealing their explicate romantic attraction. “Obsidian” explores this
relationship further and demonstrates how both characters can continue to grow
and change with each other, including accepting their faults and traumas.
